Spain’s Canary Island was a popular tourism destination in 2012. The Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean is known for its year round pleasant subtropical weather. Unlike the mainland where summer is the high tourist season, the Canarian archipelago attracts tourists throughout the year.

The rugged landscape of the archipelago, sculpted by volcanic activities, is dotted with idyllic beaches. Covered with lush vegetation, the Canary Islands are ecological treasure houses of Spain. Tourism is the main industry of the archipelago. It is estimated that approximately 12 million tourists visit the islands of the Canarian archipelago every year.

Attractions of Canary Islands

Beaches

The main attraction of the Canary Islands is its lovely beaches. To enhance the visual appeal of the coast and increase the scope for beach activities, the original black soil of some of the Canarian beaches have been covered with golden sands brought from Africa. The beaches of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma and La Gomera are renowned for their natural beauty. Washed by the clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the beaches are prefect sites for sunbathing. Another popular feature of the Canarian coast is the massive undulating sand dunes. The dunes of Maspalomas in Gran Canaria are one of the must-see attractions of the archipelago.

Water Sports

The windy condition of the Canarian coast has made it a popular surfing venue. The swells offer different levels of challenges to the surfers. Although surfing facilities are available in most of the islands of the archipelago, Lanzarote is considered one of the top destinations of surfers in the Atlantic. Apart from surfing, there is plenty of scope for scuba diving, sailing, kite surfing, paragliding and deep-sea fishing.

Hiking and Nature Walks

Home to some of the finest nature parks of Spain, the Canary Islands is a popular destination for nature lovers. Located at the foot of the largest volcano of Spain, the Tiede National Park is the archipelago’s largest nature park. Situated in Tenerife, there is ample scope for hiking, climbing and nature walks in the park. In La Gomera, the Garajonay National Park is one of the best examples of the laurisilva forest that once covered the entire European continent during the Tertiary period.

Carnivals

Fiestas are a prominent part of Spanish culture. The Canarian archipelago is no different. The most famous carnivals of the archipelago are hosted in Tenerife and Las Palmas during spring.
