The province of Aklan it touted as one of the top destinations in the Philippines for it is the home of world-class Boracay resorts. This paradise-like haven presents the timeless beauty of its fine white-sand beaches that charm countless visitors from all over the world. But aside from the fascinating island, Aklan — the oldest province in the country — also boasts other equally enticing attractions that can be found near some Boracay hotels. Among these are:

Agtawagon Hill and Freedom Shrine

The Agtawagon Hill in Balete was considered as the last line of defense of the revolutionary Filipinos during the Spanish occupation. This hill also served as a camp of Filipino guerrillas and soldiers during the Second World War. Meanwhile, the Freedom Shrine in Kalibo was built as a memorial to local patriots. This monument has 19 steps that bear the mortal remains of the 19 martyrs of Aklan. A bust of Gen. Francisco Del Castillo, the leader of Katipunan in Aklan, sits on the top of the shrine.

Tigwati-an Island and Tinagong Dagat

These 2 pristine places will surely capture your senses as you explore the other parts of island during your stay in a Boracay beach resort. Also known as the Crystal Cove, the Tigwati-an Island features various sizes and kinds of shells that lie on the shore. It is also home to a few caves with impressive crystalline formations. On the other hand, Tinagong Dagat is a secluded part of the sea where you can see a few islets bordered with mangroves. This rocky beach is placed between the islands of Batan and Altavas.

Ignito Cave

Also called the Elephant Cave, this natural wonder is popular for its beautiful limestone formations. Ignito Cave is the grandest and longest cave in Buruanga, Aklan, with immense deposits of stalactites, stalagmites, and other crystalline structures. This site is also renowned for large deposits of guano (feces) from inhabiting bats and birds.

Jawili Falls

To relish a more revitalizing nature trip, soak in the fresh and cool waters of Jawili Falls. Set in Tangalan, Kalibo, this attraction is known for its 7 natural basins that are more prominent during the rainy season. The lush forest surrounding the falls adds to the serene atmosphere in the area and draws travelers to go for a refreshing walk. Jawili Falls is close to some Boracay hotels that provide value-filled accommodation in the island.

Museo It Akean

Located in Kalibo, the Museo It Akean is a depository that displays a collection of Aklanon artworks and antiques. It also shelters Spanish regime artifacts, such as piña textiles, clay crafts, religious relics, and furniture. Another exclusive feature of this museum is the memorabilia of Fr. Gabriel M. Reyes, the Archbishop of Manila from 1949 to 1952. These exhibits, which depict the province’s rich cultural and historical heritage, are conveniently accessible to several Boracay resorts .
